“What moves me most about Elliott's work is his compassionate rendering of Howell's interior landscape. Those Three Bullies functioning as invasive thoughts, their voices corroding his confidence, their laughter undermining every tentative step toward self-belief—this captures the phenomenology of anxiety and self-doubt with devastating precision. Dani's exhortation to "overcome your greatest enemy—yourself" isn't platitudinous self-help rhetoric but hard-won wisdom.”

The Main Characters
Howell Evans
Howell is a twelve, almost thirteen, year old boy who doesn't think he's exceptional. When we first meet him, he is being attacked by three bullies, a regular, after-school occurrence. They mock his name, calling him HHHH-OOOO-WWWW-LLLL. They also mock the strange antics of his mother and uncle, both of whom come from Wales. But all that changes for Howell when unusual figures enter his life.
The Man in Black
A figure confronts Howell. "It is a man, dressed in a full-length black leather coat buttoned up to the neck and tied at the waist with thick string. Heavy, biker boots with six-inch platforms poke from under his coat. He pushes back the leather hood pulled over his head. His face is white, skeletal with a long-beaked nose. His right eye is large and blood red. A black patch covers his left eye, and, in the middle of the patch, glows a yellow spot. It travels up and down my body like a laser."
Tommy Foxglove

Howell's sister's boyfriend--supposedly!    "His steel-grey, dead eyes pierce through his rimless glasses. A manic smile spreads across his face. The evil clown in the sewer."  Tommy's task is to keep an eye on Howell while he is in the home.  But Tommy seems troubled by a portrait of a white lady on a white horse that hangs on Howell's bedroom wall.  Why?  It is a representation of Howell's mother, Rhiannon.

Dani Walks-Her-Pony

A young, native-American girl who suddenly enters Howell's life.  She is accompanied by a wolf.   "A long, dark braid flows down the girl’s back.  As she smiles, I remember seeing the white teeth that gleamed against her brown skin. Like the other woman, the girl wears a turquoise, loose-fitting blouse. Her ankle-length skirt is covered with flowers, lines and multi-colored symbols"

Leonel

A young, Spanish and English speaking blind boy who becomes a friend to Howell on his journey to find his mother.  There are times when Leonel can "see"!

Dazmonique

Another previously-unknown young girl who aids Howell.  Dazmonique and her mother live in New Orleands.  They often speak Haitian.  Dazmonique is deaf but, like the blind Leonel who "sees," Damonique "hears."

Uncle Tal

Howell is embarrassed by his weird Uncle Tal (short for Taliesin).  He dresses in strange, multi-colored clothing, and drives around in a purple Volkswagen van decorated with painted sunflowers, daffodils and mathematical symbols.

Uncle Tal will lead Howell on his pursuit of his missing mother.

The Episodes
Only You Can Save Her!
When a boy's mother vanishes after a car crash, he's thrust into a perilous quest. Guided by an eccentric uncle and aided by three unfamiliar allies, he must confront dark forces and his own doubts to rescue his mother before an important birthday.

"Only You Can Save Her" is the one-hour pilot television series based on my YA novel, THE BOY WHO EARNED HIS MAGIC.

Be Prepared for What?
Howell and friends arrive at a school in the desert where they prepare to face evil forces. But even the school itself is not safe.

Howell meets three boye in the school for DOETHS,  These three, supposedly "special children," remind him of three bullies at home in Mount Shasta.  They act like them too.

My Greatest Enemy - Myself!
Howell and his friends face many dangers: a flash flood, a huge, deadly snake and many more. But the greatest danger is Howell himself.

The school is taken over by Drygoni (evil forces) led by Professor Drago Lucian.  He gives the students a task: to find and return some "Apache tears."  Howell finds himself wishing he was on the other team, led by the bullies, rather than his own.  He begins to argue with his "friends," something that results in him being returned home.  He has failed in his quest to find his mother.

Look Into My Eyes!
Howell returns to his friends in the desert questing for Apache Tears. The search is demanding and, with Howell as leader, ultimately successful, but not as Professor Drago Lucian intended.

During their quest for "Apache tears," the friends meet a deadly challenge.

Kochma Kote! Nightmare Place!
With the aid of Uncle Tal and the other Doeths [wizards], Howell and his friends escape Professor Drago Lucian’s school in the desert.

Howell and his friends, with the help of Uncle Tal and Esther Evening Star, have escaped from the school controlled by Drygoni. They race across the desert, pursued by Drygoni, and arrive at the base of a cliff dwelling. All except Howell and Leonel climb the rope ladder and are safe. But Leonel has fallen. Howell remains to help Leonel.

Travese Envizib. Invisible Crossings
Howell and friends enter the tunnels that lead to the central kiva. Here Howell confronts the Evil Force behind his mother’s disappearance.

Howell and his friend enter the haunted kiva where Howell's mother is held.  The passageways are confusing, but Howell has a guide to help him.  Even then, the twins get the group into trouble.

Conclusion
Some Final Thoughts

“The Boy Who Earned His Magic” is a fantasy adventure-quest, utilizing the relatively unexplored world of the differing characters, peoples, languages, myths and dramatic landscapes that make up my adopted country, the United States.,

Few young adult mystery novels focus on the wealth of multi-cultural material and characters available in the western United States.  Here there are not only a wide range of mysterious places and happenings available, but each child brings elements of his or her own language, stories, cultures and mythologies.

Dani's exhortation to "overcome your greatest enemy—yourself" isn't platitudinous self-help rhetoric but hard-won wisdom.”  Lonely Wolf International Film Festival (London)

Lynn H. Elliott thrusts us into liminal bildungsroman where the Crossingway becomes young Howell Evans’s crucible for self-actualisation—Campbellian monomyth for TikTok generation and brilliant psychogeographical excavation. Elliott refuses colonial impulse appropriating Indigenous spirituality, instead positioning Diné, Mixtec, and Welsh mythologies as coequal cosmological frameworks challenging Western rationalism’s hegemony.   Lonely Wolf International Film Festival (London)

about me

I was born in Cardiff, the capital of Wales and received a degree from the University of Nottingham and then completed an MA and PhD at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I have a younger brother who is 12 years younger than me and a sister who is 2 years older than me. My sister and brother both live in the UK.

I am an immigrant (born and raised in Wales) with a name (common for males in my home country of Wales) that confuses me as female. That might explain why I love to explore and write, in serious and comic dramatic forms, stories of those who, through choice or happenstance, find themselves strangers in a strange land (or even in their own land). In addition, I share the immigrants’ attempts to “navigate as safely as possible through an ever-shifting landscape of independent and unpredictable powers” (Alan Jacabs), and the difficulty of coalescing given and adopted values and ways of seeing.

I am Emeritus Professor, English and Creative Writing at California State University, Chico. I served six years as Chair of English.
